Millions of Signs

OK, maybe not millions. There are nevertheless a lot of signs that Gen-Y people are likely to be amenable to eCounselling. Task not time is one I've just seen. It mentions an HBR article by Tamara Erickson that lists two things that Gen-Yers are likely to seek in a job:
  • 'Make physical attendance at the office, including meetings, optional
  • 'Use networking technology to let employees work from anywhere'
For me it's the way a Gen-Yer knows all of the menu options on their cellphone. The point is that this segment of the population has no fear of electronic communication and doesn't worry much about being physically present with others who are working on the same task. Beyond that, they might be more accepting of asynchronous communication than previous generations.

But do Gen-Yers need employment and career counselling?

Well, yes, I think so. Even if the availability of counselling to students and employed people in this society has considerably improved since the Boomers were in the early stages of their careers the world of work has become much more complicated than it was then and is subject to more rapid change. The Gen-Yers need counselling (whether they're aware of it or not) and eCounselling looks like being a viable way of doing it, at attractive costs and availability, for many of them.
