Job Application Persistence Pays Off

"For 10 years [Captain Barbara Harmer] remained Concorde's only woman pilot to fly regular commercial services..." I regret that I have only just read of her in an obituary notice. She began her working life as an apprentice hairdresser. After deciding that this was an unsuitable occupation for her she became an air traffic controller, then learned to fly and finally funded her training as a commercial pilot with a bank loan of about $15,700.

And then she had to submit about 100 applications before she landed her first job as a pilot.

She's definitely admirable, both for choosing an interesting field in which to work and for her persistence. Imagine sending out 100 applications! I know some people would feel like giving up after only 20.
